Protect Your Home With Garage Door Locks

Your garage is an easy place for burglars to enter your home, but luckily upgrading your garage door locks is easy as well!  Garage door security locks are extremely important on older manual doors where the lock is probably as old as the door is.  Old locks like that are easy to break or pick and an intruder can easily make their way into your garage, or worse, your home.  In this post we’ll take a look at what it takes to install a garage door lock as well as how to secure your home from the garage.

There are lots of different designs of garage doors, which means there are lots of variations on their locks.  To save yourself a lot of work, it’s important that you find garage door locks and handles that will fit right in with your setup.  This may mean removing the old one to see what the replacement needs to be, or taking a picture and bringing it with you to the hardware store.  Just be sure that you secure the door if there isn’t a lock on there!

In most cases you’ll be able to install garage door locks exactly how the old one was removed.  There may be some additional drilling to secure the features of the new one, but it’s normally a very easy job.  Be sure that you closely inspect any hardware that’s not being replaced to make sure that it’s in good condition and not in need of replacement before calling this job finished.

Garages are a common way for intruders to enter homes.  This is usually from people forgetting to lock the garage door, but old locks and hardware can also easily be broken.  As you’re replacing your garage door lock, be sure to take a very close look at all other possible entry points, including the garage door itself.  Breaking through a garage door isn’t beyond many thieves, and if yours can easily be penetrated it might be a good idea to reinforce it or consider upgrading.
