Therefore, whether you are just tightening the hinges on that squeaky door, or you are installing crown molding in your living room to give it a face lift, you should consider whether or not you have the right DIY tools to get the job done.

Your first big decision in choosing your set of DIY tools is whether you want to deal with tools. There are many different advantages and disadvantages to both, so weighing them in your mind is a major decision before you make a purchase. Cordless tools have the ability to be taken anywhere, but because they run on battery power, they need to be charged. With corded tools, this does not become a problem until you try and do a job outside of an electric source, which leaves you needing to move closer. Sometimes it is good to have both, particularly if you are an avid DIY home improvement person.

Aside from this, price is the next major topic when discussing DIY tools. Cordless tools tend to be more expensive than their corded counterparts, because of the advantage of being able to take them anywhere. However, with recent developments, cordless tools are becoming less expensive, so if you do not mind paying a few dollars extra, cordless may be the way to go.

Once you have decided on cords or not, your next major decision comes in how much power you need. There is nothing worse than getting halfway through a job and being unable to complete it because your equipment keeps dying. Getting a cordless tool with high enough voltage to last the job is very important, since the typical cordless drill comes with a battery that runs anywhere from 9.6V all the way up to 36V. Along with different types of voltage come different battery types, which plays an important part on just how long your battery will last. Nickel-Cadmium is the most popular choice for power tools, but it is much heavier than newer battery types and tends to die sooner. The cream of the crop is the Lithium-Ion battery, which can last several hours longer than its Nickel-Cadmium counterpart. However, the price for these batteries is steep for such convenience.
