Long gone are the days when you would head to the hardware store and ask for a few dozen heating vents and the clerk would come back with a few dozen generic white vents. Nowadays, the heating vents are an integral part of your home’s design. There are tons of different designs that will suit the style of any home. In this post I want to shed some light on the options that are out there, and how to get a good deal on them.

Floor and ceiling vents are also called “registers” so if you ask someone at the local hardware store where the vents are and they give you a blank stare, that’s why!

Decorative heating vents come in tons of different styles. There are art-deco designs that will fit perfect in a modern home, or for a more traditional look you can use a Victorian or Gothic design. Vents aren’t difficult to paint to match your walls or floor, so all you have to do is find ones that suit your theme. For the bare metal heating vents you can expect to pay anywhere between $8 and $18 a pop, and the high-end, finished ones will set you back between $18 and $25 a piece.

A new (and very cool) design of heating vent has an extra air filter built right into it. This is perfect for families that have bad allergies since the filter will trap most of the extra dust and allergens that like to hang out in your air ducts. Keep in mind that these filters will have to be replaced just like all of the other air filters in your home, so be ready for the added expense.

With some simple math you’ll see that upgrading all of the heating air vents in your home is going to set you back quite a bit of cash. When I upgraded mine I bought them online and learned a few things that I want to share with you. I have an 1800 square foot home with three bedrooms and two baths that required nine new heating vents, so instead of spending well over $200 with shipping I decided to figure out a better way. First, it really pays to shop around, prices vary a lot from one manufacturer to another. Second, you can save a lot of money if the store has bulk pricing. I didn’t order enough to qualify for bulk pricing, but if I did I would have gone that way. Third (and what I went with), is to find free shipping. Nine heating vents weighs quite a bit, so shipping costs can get fairly steep.

In short, I shopped around until I found a good price from a manufacturer that offered free shipping. I would have taken bulk pricing if I could have qualified. Saving money on heating vents is easy when you have the time and patience to do so!
