If we look at what your curtains say about you, you might be surprised at how much can be told from the fabric you have hanging at your windows. (And it may just make you pay more attention when you choose window curtains in future).

For example, if you have just not got around to getting curtains at all you might be seen as someone who does not care about appearances (or, more worryingly, as someone who is too bone idle or poverty stricken to go out and buy window curtains!)

If you have played it safe with very simple neutral curtains you may be seen as someone who is calm and unruffled (or someone who is too timid to show their true personality). Only you can decide which one you are and whether you want to change your curtain choices as a result.

If your curtains are dusty or otherwise grubby, then that says a lot about your standards of hygiene and to present your best face to the world, you need to get your curtains cleaned or replaced pretty quickly unless you want the world to think the worst of you.

There is no one right set of curtains however, in the same way that there is not a perfect personality. There is only a perfect set of curtains for the room you are decorating which match the style of the room, the style of your home and your own personal taste. If you pay attention to all three however and don’t just pick up the first set of curtains that “will do” because the price is right then you will get on a lot better than the majority of folks buying curtains.

My favourite style of kitchen curtain is the half-sized curtain that hangs on a rod that has thin side curtains down either side of the kitchen window. I do not need to totally close my kitchen curtains at night, and I prefer not to have curtains hanging down around the counters as they often tend to get quite dirty and it can sometimes be very difficult to get the stains out.  Slim side curtains can be made from lace and can be easily tied back if necessary with a small piece of colored ribbon or cloth.

All you need to sew a hand made kitchen curtain is the right material, a little time that you can dedicate to sewing, and a sewing machine.  You should choose material that is fairly lightweight, washable and that is a color that does not show dirt stains very easily.  Common patterns for kitchen curtain material are checkered or diamond patterned material, greens and browns are common colors. Another favoured style of kitchen curtains is the Tuscan style kitchen, featuring Mediterranean style prints of grape vines, or striped curtain material.

White kitchen curtains really do look great, but they also show the slightest speck of dirt and if not kept washed very often they can tend to go gray or brown, or become yellow in the sun.  Also, you may want to make sure that whatever material you use for your kitchen curtains, it is fire and mold resistant.  Fire can be a very real hazard in a kitchen and curtains are apt to be some of the first things to go up in smoke. Also, the dampness from steam in the kitchen does tend to encourage the growth of mold.

There are a lot of free patterns online for sewing curtains, so if you are not able to come up with a simple design yourself it is very easy to find something online and either use it as is, or adapt it to your particular needs.  Sewing a curtain that goes on a rod is much simpler than sewing one that has pleats or folds in it, and thankfully you do not usually hang pleated curtains in kitchen windows.
