How Big Should My Heater Be?

Make Your Own Kitchen Curtains

If you are at all handy with sewing, you may want to try your hand at making kitchen curtains. Hand made kitchen curtains can look great, and there are a lot of different, very simple designs that you can work with that would not take too long to make.

My favourite style of kitchen curtain is the half-sized curtain that hangs on a rod that has thin side curtains down either side of the kitchen window. I do not need to totally close my kitchen curtains at night, and I prefer not to have curtains hanging down around the counters as they often tend to get quite dirty and it can sometimes be very difficult to get the stains out.  Slim side curtains can be made from lace and can be easily tied back if necessary with a small piece of colored ribbon or cloth.

All you need to sew a hand made kitchen curtain is the right material, a little time that you can dedicate to sewing, and a sewing machine.  You should choose material that is fairly lightweight, washable and that is a color that does not show dirt stains very easily.  Common patterns for kitchen curtain material are checkered or diamond patterned material, greens and browns are common colors. Another favoured style of kitchen curtains is the Tuscan style kitchen, featuring Mediterranean style prints of grape vines, or striped curtain material.

White kitchen curtains really do look great, but they also show the slightest speck of dirt and if not kept washed very often they can tend to go gray or brown, or become yellow in the sun.  Also, you may want to make sure that whatever material you use for your kitchen curtains, it is fire and mold resistant.  Fire can be a very real hazard in a kitchen and curtains are apt to be some of the first things to go up in smoke. Also, the dampness from steam in the kitchen does tend to encourage the growth of mold.

There are a lot of free patterns online for sewing curtains, so if you are not able to come up with a simple design yourself it is very easy to find something online and either use it as is, or adapt it to your particular needs.  Sewing a curtain that goes on a rod is much simpler than sewing one that has pleats or folds in it, and thankfully you do not usually hang pleated curtains in kitchen windows.

Water pressure comes from the tank, and many homes suffer from low pressure due to the height of the storage tank. You can increase the water pressure by raising the tank height. In many cases this only needs to be elevated by 200 millimetres or so. Remember that you will also need to lengthen the pipes that feed the tank and supply the water to the shower itself.

Raising the tank height creates more pressure due to gravity, and thus provides extra pressure. If this is not a viable solution then you could fit a booster pump. These come in either a single or dual pump and will need to be installed by a qualified electrician, unless you are one yourself. Many hardware stores will sell these pumps, or you can go online to stores like argos, who specialise in this area. A single booster pump should be fitted between the shower controls and the spray. The dual pumps should be fitted to the supply piping to create an even pressure before the water reaches the mixer. For even greater pressure you can buy bended fittings or bend the pipe work yourself, but be very careful not to kink the pipes if you do this.

Next up you need to decide which type of shower to go for. Mixer showers are those that combine hot and cold water from the same outlet. To control the temperature you simply turn the dial. Push on mixer showers can be fitted to bath taps and are basically a rubber hose that can attached when showering. They are controlled by the bath taps. The only downside is that the taps will be harder to reach when showering. The most expensive units are the thermostatically controlled mixers that can also regulate pressure and temperature.
