How Furnace Filters Function
Furnace filters do more than the obvious job of trapping dirt and unwanted dust from coming into your furnace. The right type of furnace filter can additionally achieve the task of trapping out particles and dust particles that are passed through your furnace and therefore end up circulating through the air that you breathe in your home. There are many different varieties of air borne particles that flow into in your home and that you breath in, these will include things such as dust particles, pet fur, mildew spores and much more.
A furnace filter achieves a fairly simple task. Each sort of furnace filter that you may purchase is in theory intended to do the same job of trapping all the unwanted irritants that flow into in your home. The manner in which this works is somewhat more detailed then that straight forward description.
Basic filters are meant to trap large particles so that the air flow through the filter isn’t blocked up and their remains area for free air flow through the filter. There are other filters that do filter out a lot of smaller air particles but the particles quickly stop up the filter leaving no area for ample air flow and this leads to the furnace having to work harder to push air through the filter. This could result in your furnace breaking down. The way to prevent this is by using a washable furnace filter and making sure to clean it out regularly.
Disposable fiberglass filters are both popular and low-cost. The downside is that they are not very efficient. One of the problems of those fiberglass disposable filters is that their surface if terribly limited. Catching all the little particles would clog the filter and scale back air flow. They are good at filtering large dirt and other particles within the air however this suggests that the smaller and doubtless more serious particles to breath are left unfiltered.
The pleated air filter style provides additional surface space on the face of the filter air filter. What this means in practice is that pleated air filters will be able to trap particles of all sizes, including the smaller particles that circulate in the air in your home.
The way of rating the efficiency of furnace filters is termed MERVs. A higher rating means more efficiency. The measurement that the MERV system uses to evaluate filtration rates is the size of the particles in microns that the filter is able to trap. If you want the best furnace filter for your home furnace then you should shop around for filters that have a basic MERV rating of 5 but in fact higher is better. If the furnace filter you’re considering has a MERV rating that’s lower than 4 then you ought to think about getting at a completely different kind since this will not sufficiently filter particles from the air.

How To Find A Quality Home Improvement Contractor
So, you are in the market for a home improvement contractor to do some remodeling on your home. First and foremost, you need to make sure that the person that you are hiring is reputable, trustworthy and capable of completing your job in a timely fashion and meets all of the requirements of your town, village or city.
Word of mouth is still the best way to find contractors, electricians, plumber and mechanics. You need to trust the people you are friends with and the members of your family. Home improvements can be expensive, and you only want to do it once. You definitely do not want to have to do it again.
Quality home improvement is so important when trying to maintain or increase the value of your home. You want to get the best home improvement you can for your dollar and quality is so important. Make sure that the material the contractor is planning on using is up to your standards. Research the materials and make sure you are knowledgeable on the topic. You do not want someone to talk circles around you while you have no idea what they are talking about.
If you are handy you should consider doing it yourself. DIY home improvements are definitely on the rise. With all of the self-help books out there as well as the Internet, there really is not much that a homeowner cannot do. You may not want to play with electrical wires yourself, but some simple routine construction might be realistic. Many of the larger home improvement chains encourage DIY home improvements. They have experts there to help you purchase the right materials and talk you through the steps of almost any home improvement project.
If your home needs a face-lift, you definitely have some options. You can ask around and find two or three reliable contractors that will give you quality home improvements. Meet and interview each one of the contractors that have been recommended to you. Ask for some numbers of clients he/she has recently done work for and call them to see how the quality of his work was. Your second option is to research the projects you are planning on completing and see if you can do it yourself. Figure out the materials you are going to need, the tools and the time and see which plan suits you better. You might just find that DIY construction is the best answer for you and your budget or you might find that it suits you better to have someone do it for you who can provide quality home improvements.
DIY Home Improvement Tools
With the economy in a slump and repairs needed around the home now more than ever, it can be an encouraging thought to want to do these repairs yourself. However, what any DIY home improvement expert will tell you is that you’ll need a great set of tools to get the job done and to make it easier on you. Therefore, whether you are just tightening the hinges on that squeaky door, or you are installing crown molding in your living room to give it a face lift, you should consider whether or not you have the right DIY tools to get the job done.
Your first big decision in choosing your set of DIY tools is whether you want to deal with tools. There are many different advantages and disadvantages to both, so weighing them in your mind is a major decision before you make a purchase. Cordless tools have the ability to be taken anywhere, but because they run on battery power, they need to be charged. With corded tools, this does not become a problem until you try and do a job outside of an electric source, which leaves you needing to move closer. Sometimes it is good to have both, particularly if you are an avid DIY home improvement person.
Aside from this, price is the next major topic when discussing DIY tools. Cordless tools tend to be more expensive than their corded counterparts, because of the advantage of being able to take them anywhere. However, with recent developments, cordless tools are becoming less expensive, so if you do not mind paying a few dollars extra, cordless may be the way to go.
Once you have decided on cords or not, your next major decision comes in how much power you need. There is nothing worse than getting halfway through a job and being unable to complete it because your equipment keeps dying. Getting a cordless tool with high enough voltage to last the job is very important, since the typical cordless drill comes with a battery that runs anywhere from 9.6V all the way up to 36V. Along with different types of voltage come different battery types, which plays an important part on just how long your battery will last. Nickel-Cadmium is the most popular choice for power tools, but it is much heavier than newer battery types and tends to die sooner. The cream of the crop is the Lithium-Ion battery, which can last several hours longer than its Nickel-Cadmium counterpart. However, the price for these batteries is steep for such convenience.
Upgrade A Bathroom Wall Cabinet To Improve Your Home’s Value
With the housing market in the state that it is, selling homes is very difficult. Increasing their value isn’t, and something as simple as upgrading a bathroom cabinet can make a big difference. It’s just one of the thousands of little things that a DIY homeowner can do to help them sell their house and get the most for it when the time is right.
Wall mounted bathroom cabinets are also an excellent way to improve the storage space in your bathroom. Most bathrooms will already have some sort of cabinet space in them, so you may choose to just upgrade those rather than install something new. Or you can go as far as to install a new double vanity with wall cabinets on the sides, the choice is totally up to you. In this post I want to share some tricks that I’ve learned for shopping and installing a bathroom wall cabinet.
If your bathroom already has a set of cabinets that you want to keep, it’s important that you get wall cabinets that either match or compliment the existing ones. This is tougher than you might think, and it may involve having to refinish the existing cabinets to get the finish to match. As cabinets age their color can change quite a bit, so you may be buying something that is in the same color finish as what’s already there but after bringing it home you realize it’s not quite the same. A good trick to help you out is to take off one of the existing doors and bring it with you when shopping for the new ones so you can check how close they match in finish.
If you’re replacing wall cabinets altogether, your choices are almost limitless. You want to make sure that what you’re installing will fit, and isn’t too heavy for the studs in the wall to support it. Installing these cabinets isn’t very difficult, but most stores will offer professional installation if you’re not comfortable doing it yourself.
Installing a medicine cabinet style wall cabinet is quite a bit harder since they’re usually mounted inside the wall. This requires that you measure the distance between the studs and find a cabinet that will fit in, cutting the hole in the wall to accommodate the new one, and securing it.
Installing the regular bathroom wall cabinets isn’t nearly as tough, but it requires two or three people (depending on the size of the cabinet). There has to be someone there to hold the cabinet in place, and someone to make sure it’s level and attach it. Make sure that you’re dead on with your studs before getting too far into this, since these cabinets rely on the studs to stay on the wall.
Changing out your bathroom wall cabinets is a fairly easy job that can be completed in a weekend. It’s also an excellent way to improve the value of your home and get more storage and functionality out of a bathroom’s limited space.
Protect Your Home With Garage Door Locks
Your garage is an easy place for burglars to enter your home, but luckily upgrading your garage door locks is easy as well! Garage door security locks are extremely important on older manual doors where the lock is probably as old as the door is. Old locks like that are easy to break or pick and an intruder can easily make their way into your garage, or worse, your home. In this post we’ll take a look at what it takes to install a garage door lock as well as how to secure your home from the garage.
There are lots of different designs of garage doors, which means there are lots of variations on their locks. To save yourself a lot of work, it’s important that you find garage door locks and handles that will fit right in with your setup. This may mean removing the old one to see what the replacement needs to be, or taking a picture and bringing it with you to the hardware store. Just be sure that you secure the door if there isn’t a lock on there!
In most cases you’ll be able to install garage door locks exactly how the old one was removed. There may be some additional drilling to secure the features of the new one, but it’s normally a very easy job. Be sure that you closely inspect any hardware that’s not being replaced to make sure that it’s in good condition and not in need of replacement before calling this job finished.
Garages are a common way for intruders to enter homes. This is usually from people forgetting to lock the garage door, but old locks and hardware can also easily be broken. As you’re replacing your garage door lock, be sure to take a very close look at all other possible entry points, including the garage door itself. Breaking through a garage door isn’t beyond many thieves, and if yours can easily be penetrated it might be a good idea to reinforce it or consider upgrading.
Improve Roof Ventilation To Protect Your Home And Save Money
Improving roof ventilation is something that most people overlook, but can have a huge effect on the structure of your home as well as heating and cooling costs. Allowing air to move freely through your attic will help your roof last as long as your house does. Continuous freezing or damming from snow, as well as letting hot air stay in there can cause a slew of problems that people just don’t pay attention to. In this post we’ll go over some ways to help ventilate your roof and attic as well as help you better understand the problems that you run into when you don’t.
Failure to properly ventilate your roof can cause your roof to collapse. That’s not a joke at all, roofs can cave in if there isn’t air circulating through the attic! In order for a plywood roof to maintain its rigidity one side of it needs to be able to “breathe”. If it doesn’t do that it will warp and eventually deteriorate, causing the roof to be springy and vulnerable. Lack of circulation also inhibits extra moisture in the attic, which leads to condensation, which leads to rust and leaks. Extra moisture can also lead to fungus and mildew growing in the attic, which will work its way into the rest of your home.
So what do you do to prevent these nasty messes? It starts with intake vents and roof vents. The intake vents are the grates that you see on the exterior of your home just below the eaves. These allow air into the attic and once it’s warmed by being inside the attic it rises up and out through the roof vents. If you’re having problems with the circulation of air in the attic check all of your intake vents first to make sure that nothing is blocking them, as this is a very common problem.
It’s possible to overdo your roof ventilation. Ideally, roof vents should be on the ridge of the roof so that all of the air has to hit the top before exiting, so when vents or turbines are in places other than the ridge it will create a bunch of stale air sitting at the peak of the roof.
To sum it up, check your intake vents first to make sure that they’re clean and clear so air can get in. Second, check the roof vents to make sure that they’re in good working order. If they need to be replaced you can look to replace them with powered models that work with a thermostat to make sure that ideal attic temperature is always achieved. Third, don’t go adding a bunch of extra vents to your roof, it will only cause more problems!
TV Stand Furniture Can Be A Living Rooms Best Friend
For odd sized rooms you can always choose custom built and made to order flat screen TV stands. There are some choices here when it comes to TV stand furniture. Many furniture stores have one style and size on display, but other sizes can be specially ordered. It could take a while, but sometimes this might be your only option. If the TV stands furniture is really being custom made, it could take up to 8 months because some manufacturers wait for a certain number of orders before starting the process due to the tooling and machinery requirements.
If you have a special type in mind and you know it’s too expensive for your budget, try looking at something used. Check out Ebay or Craigslist or your local classifieds. Frequently people will sell these things if they have to move because it’s easier than storing them. You can also find cheap flat screen TV stands on Amazon as well.
Also, if you’re into eclectic and the shabby chic look, you might want to consider getting something that wasn’t even made for TVs. A unique bedroom bureau or a dining room buffet server are nice choices and they can add plenty of spunk to just about any design or feel you have in mind. For less formal looks, consider something like a butcher block kitchen portable island or server. These are pretty durable, too. Usually you can find them with either metal or wooden bottoms, and they have drawers for storage. For bedrooms, the new flat screen TVs can easily be placed on top of a bureau without any damage like sagging or scratching. Also the old school rolling carts of TV carts as they are referred to now serve as a great way to display your television. You do not have to go and pick out a high end television stand especially if you are strapped for cash.
Information About Roof Insulation
Roof insulation is a vital consideration for all categories of homeowners as it can have a huge effect on your overall energy consumption. While your home remains uninsulated around one quarter of the heat will ultimately be lost as it passes up and through the roof of your property. This will lead to an increase in your energy bills as well as add to the primary cause of global warming, increasing levels of CO2 emissions. Contrary to popular belief insulating the roof of a property does not need to be a lengthy or time intensive undertaking and can in many cases be taken care of by the homeowner themselves. In most cases the procedure will involve installing the roof insulation materials in the flooring of your loft and is usually a pretty simple task.
roof insulation installed in your loft is very often a good option for the vast majority of homes. It is important though to inspect the current condition of your loft before beginning installation or making any big purchases. There are some homes which will need more specialised insulation that is tailored to their individual needs. These are often homes which experience problems such as the effects of condensation or damp in their loft areas. Also limited accessibility to the loft may affect the kind of insulation which would be best suited to your home as a need for flat roofing insulation sometimes will. In these situations it is usually best to contact an insulation contractor and ask them to inspect the loft for you. In many cases they will require the installation of blown insulation that will need carried professional workmen.
Most homeowners would like to know what they will be saving in monetary terms when installing insulation for the loft in their home. It is hard to calculate a figure that will be anywhere near applicable to everyone. In most cases you should expect your loft insulation to pay for itself in energy savings after about 5 years and sometimes less. For some homes it will always take a little longer than usual. Most high quality loft insulation will remain effective for at least 40 years and often a lot longer. During this time it should pay for itself many times over. You should also try and remember that you are saving the environment and not just your money when installing quality roof insulation in your home.
Sparkling Up Your Garage With An Epoxy Garage Floor
After organizing the shelves, finding places for all the tools, and putting in some nice lighting, what else is left to do to your garage but putting in an epoxy garage floor to make the foundation shine and gleam? Epoxy is an amazingly flexible thermosetting polymer based on the reaction between a hardener and a resin to create a material with many different applications. It can be used as an adhesive with either flexible or inflexible qualities, as exceptionally durable molds or fixtures, and even as various parts for intricate computer circuits. But the most valuable use for epoxy in your garage is to use it as a coating on your floor, for various reasons from protecting the floor from gas, oil and other chemical spills to beautifying the space. Two-part epoxy coatings are extremely safe when used properly, and have many advantages over other coatings or leaving your garage floor entirely uncoated. Epoxy dries quickly, so that the disruption to your ordinary parking habits is minimal, and the resulting coating is resistance to UV, abrasions, and other forms of damage. And it wipes off extremely easily, just like a countertop, making the dreaded task of cleaning your garage much less dreadful! Besides all the protective benefits, epoxy also gives the floor of your garage a certain aesthetic boost as well. Epoxy can offer a shine as professional and sleek as that of any mall, office, or car store. In fact, it can even smooth over blemishes in the original floor, making them less noticeable. Epoxy is extremely cheap as far as high-quality coating materials go, and can be bought for about the same money that you would spend on a delivered pizza. So if you’re having trouble figuring out the right final touches to make your garage perfect, give epoxy some thought. It can do wonders for your garage floor. Why you Shouldn’t Buy a Cheap Electric Coffee Maker
These days, both the internet and stores are inundated by countless coffee makers. Some of these machines are of great quality, and others are pretty much useless pieces of plastic junk that are only capable of churning out foul tasting coffee. You might think that it is pretty hard to find an electric coffee maker that produces great tasting coffee, but there are a few simple things that can help you make a good choice.
The first thing you should know is that it isn’t usually a good idea to buy the cheapest electric coffee makers you can find. There are factories in China that specialize in pumping out millions of these things everyday, and their goal is to minimize costs. What this translates into is the cheapest plastic materials possible, resulting in a cup of coffee that tastes like the machine it was made in. If you just want a cheap cup of coffee, do yourself a favor and buy one of those little hard plastic filter cones that you just put on top of your cup. All you have to do is pour a hot water onto the waiting coffee grounds and you will make a cup that tastes better than if you used a really cheap coffee maker.
If you want to use a coffee maker, you should consider spending just a little bit more and getting one that is made of a higher quality. If you do some simple math, you will see that even if you spend $50 on a decent coffee maker, it still works out to be less than buying coffee at the store. Even the cheapest coffee at a store will still cost you about $1 a cup, which turns out to be $365 a year. Thinking about it this way makes it seem like even expensive coffee makers are a great deal!
How To Test The Quality Of A Tub Chair
Choosing the right tub chair can be a crucial decision if you want the best quality for the right price. There are hundreds of designs and styles available at a wide variety of prices. You need to make sure you are getting the best value for your money. The following tips should help you determine which chair is best for you.
The first thing you need to do is check the quality of the tub chair. This can be done by simply sitting in it. You should immediately feel comfortable and supported. The foam cushions and the springs in the base are what provide the comfort. The cushion should always retain its natural position when you get out of the chair. If you find it is slow to recover then the foam may be of poor quality. If you are in a furniture store then you can easily test for this. Try bouncing up and down slightly on the seat. If you hear any funny noises, or squeaks then this is a sign of inferior springs at work.
On the bottom of the chair you should find the label. This little label contains a lot of information, such as the country of origin, the manufacturer and the materials used. Tub chairs made in the Far East are typically mass produced in a large factory. They are also made from cheaper materials and this affects the overall quality and durability. Those made in Western countries tend to be much better, and are usually hand crafted from much better materials. This is reflected in the price you pay. The Far East imports may look the part, but underneath us where the real problems are found.
You can test the actual joints of the chair by kneeling on the seat and grabbing the arm rests. Try gently pushing the arm rests in different directions. You can also push the back rest forwards and backwards. If you notice a lot of movement or hear any noises then the joints are of a poor quality, or the glue has not been applied properly or adequately between these joints. If the joints are unstable then the comfort will be compromised. These are simple checks that can be done in just a few minutes, but could save you a lot of cash.
Updating Your Garage with an Epoxy Garage Floor Covering and New Storage Units
For most people, the garage is one of the last rooms in the house to get a make-over. This is the reason that so many people are living with garages that contain cracked floors, inadequate storage and that are generally unwelcoming spaces. Whether you are someone who just uses your garage as a place to park your car or you are someone who spends a great deal of time in the garage working, giving this space a facelift will make you more comfortable during the time that you spend there and increase the value of your home. There is no need to invest a great deal of money in garage restoration. In just a few easy steps, your garage will look like new.
One thing that many overlook in terms of garage maintenance is the state of the floor. Garage floors typically receive a lot of abuse, and must hold up against the weight of a car, and all the detritus that is tracked in with the tires. An epoxy garage floor covering is a great way to make your garage floor better than new, without investing a lot of time or money. These coverings are designed to be “painted” over your existing floor, covering it with a waterproof, stain resistant synthetic coating. Epoxy kits for self-installation are available through a number of companies and they will give any floor, regardless of its age, a showroom look. Epoxy garage floor covering is available in clear or tinted finishes, so it is easy to find a kit that will match the existing color scheme and furniture in your garage.
If space is at a premium in your garage, consider installing garage wall storage systems. Most of these systems are incredibly customizable, so you can find one that will accommodate perfectly all the tools and cables that you kept in your garage. Garage wall storage systems will allow those with the messiest of garages to bring some order, and create a place where they are happy to work. Garage storage systems can be purchased in hardware stores and online, and their cost will depend on the amount of storage that you require. Most of these systems are designed to be easy to install, so there is no need to bring in an outside contractor.
For those who feel their garage is an eyesore, investing a little time and money in an epoxy floor covering and new storage system will make a huge difference.
To Hire, Or Not To Hire A Chimney Sweep
While chimney sweeping as a profession may not be considered a modern way to earn a living, chimneys that are above fireplaces that are actually in use still need to be cleaned out regularly in order to keep them from catching fire and destroying the chimney and possibly the house. If you decide to do it yourself, or make it your new small business, you will need to know something about chimney sweep brushes. The two basic types of brushes are those for homeowners and the heavier duty brushes specifically made for professionals.
If you are only planning to use your brick fireplace occasionally and clean it out annually for safety, a masonry chimney sweep brush may be all that you need. These brushes come in round or square shapes with ¼-inch threads. They have hundreds of durable and tough wire bristles and they come in several sizes. The round brushes should be close to the diameter of the chimney. Their sizes range from five to twelve inches in diameter. The square brushes should be between one half and one inch larger than the inside of the chimney. These brushes come in sizes from six to twelve inch square and in rectangular from six by ten inches through twelve by sixteen inches.
If you have a metal chimney, polypropylene bristles are used on the chimney sweep brushes. Like the wire brushes, these polypropylene brushes have ¼-inch threads. The brush size should match the diameter of the inside of the chimney flu. These brushes come in sizes from five to twelve inches in diameter. Whether you have a masonry or metal chimney, the size of the chimney sweep brush you choose is extremely important. If your brush is too small, it will not do a good job of cleaning your chimney, while if it is too large, it may be stuck.
While you may decide to stay inside to clean out your chimney, that is a sure way to get a face full of soot. A more sensible way to clean out your chimney is to get an aluminum ladder that is specially formed to have hooks so you can safely attach it to the house, climb up on the roof, and clean from the top down. Aluminum ladders are popular because they are lightweight while being quite strong, able to hold 225 or more pounds.
Epoxy Garage Floors For Style And Durability
For years, garages have been havens for do-it-yourselfers and housewives alike. They provide a weather-protected location to complete everything from laundry to engine repair. The only downside of the garage is the mess that all those projects can leave behind. Spilled dyes, oils, and adhesive products can cause your garage floor to be an eyesore and a burden to care for – this is definitely not where your focus needs to be when you’ve completed that project which has taken so much hard work. Now there is an option, which is simple to apply, that can make your garage floor the perfect companion to all your tools and appliances – Epoxy Garage Floors. Epoxy floor coatings allow you to improve the look and durability of your garage floor without a high price. They can be applied professionally or can be a weekend project for the do-it-yourselfer. The steps of coating a garage floor with epoxy are fairly simple. They include removal of all non-permanent appliances, tables, and tools; masking of all areas which will not receive epoxy; application of an etching product; application of epoxy; if desired, addition of a texture or color; and application of a top coat. If you decide to complete this project on your own, always follow the manufacturer’s suggestions when preparing, applying, and drying epoxy coatings for best results. Once your coating has been applied and dries, your floor will clean easily, repel stains, and protect your concrete from wear. The smooth surface will allow rolling machinery and tool cases to be relocated with ease. The cured epoxy coating will resist fading and abrasion. Imagine the possibilities these coatings can bring – a cleaner, safer, and longer-lasting garage floor. Epoxy coatings are made to last. With proper care by adding a top coat every one to two years and an occasional wax coat, your concrete floor will endure indefinitely. Epoxy garage floors are a great investment for your home. Mission Style Furniture
Considering a rustic yet elegant look with your furniture? You should consider Mission style furniture. Mission is an extremely popular style that was originally introduced during the end of the 19th century. A furniture maker named Joseph McHugh produced the first chair in this style for a San Francisco Church.
You can spot a mission style furniture piece instantly due to its characterstic straight lines and flat panels. Wood choice can vary, but it is usually oak, owning to the abundance of this tree in California, where the style originated. Following its introduction, the style gained momentum in the early 1900’s and there are several original pieces from that era that have lasted to this day. Mission style is easily recognized and tends to produce a strong impression. Essentially, you either love it or you don’t. It’s a simple style that can look gorgeous in the proper setting.
The primary strength of mission style furniture is that it stands out in any home that does not already have a strong unified theme. It can co-exist peacefully with a large number of other styles of furniture and this exceptional versatility makes it an appealing choice. Usually, the style will appear in the bedroom and can be seen in a number of different pieces, such as beds, headboards and side tables. The understated simplicity and elegant lines in the woodwork make it a commanding and impressive choice for bedroom furniture.
The simple and functional style lends itself to use with hard woods, such as the aforementioned oak. Pieces designed in this style tend to last a considerable time and stand up well to normal wear and tear. It’s entirely possible for mission style furniture to last for decades when well-cared for and maintained with a good finish.

Shopping For Heating Vents – More Than Just White!
Long gone are the days when you would head to the hardware store and ask for a few dozen heating vents and the clerk would come back with a few dozen generic white vents. Nowadays, the heating vents are an integral part of your home’s design. There are tons of different designs that will suit the style of any home. In this post I want to shed some light on the options that are out there, and how to get a good deal on them.
Floor and ceiling vents are also called “registers” so if you ask someone at the local hardware store where the vents are and they give you a blank stare, that’s why!
Decorative heating vents come in tons of different styles. There are art-deco designs that will fit perfect in a modern home, or for a more traditional look you can use a Victorian or Gothic design. Vents aren’t difficult to paint to match your walls or floor, so all you have to do is find ones that suit your theme. For the bare metal heating vents you can expect to pay anywhere between $8 and $18 a pop, and the high-end, finished ones will set you back between $18 and $25 a piece.
A new (and very cool) design of heating vent has an extra air filter built right into it. This is perfect for families that have bad allergies since the filter will trap most of the extra dust and allergens that like to hang out in your air ducts. Keep in mind that these filters will have to be replaced just like all of the other air filters in your home, so be ready for the added expense.
With some simple math you’ll see that upgrading all of the heating air vents in your home is going to set you back quite a bit of cash. When I upgraded mine I bought them online and learned a few things that I want to share with you. I have an 1800 square foot home with three bedrooms and two baths that required nine new heating vents, so instead of spending well over $200 with shipping I decided to figure out a better way. First, it really pays to shop around, prices vary a lot from one manufacturer to another. Second, you can save a lot of money if the store has bulk pricing. I didn’t order enough to qualify for bulk pricing, but if I did I would have gone that way. Third (and what I went with), is to find free shipping. Nine heating vents weighs quite a bit, so shipping costs can get fairly steep.
In short, I shopped around until I found a good price from a manufacturer that offered free shipping. I would have taken bulk pricing if I could have qualified. Saving money on heating vents is easy when you have the time and patience to do so!
How To Find The Perfect Double Vanity
Shopping for a double vanity can be very stressful. They cost quite a bit of money and with all of the options out there, how do you know that you’re buying the right one? Have no fear! This post will take a look at some of the different features in double vanities, and the secret to making sure that you pick the right design.
When you’re browsing around for double vanities you’re going to see some huge disparities in price. You’ll see one that says it’s only $800 and another one that looks exactly the same for $2400! The key here is to look at the fine print, they probably are the same double bathroom vanity, but one lists its price with the countertop and the other is the price sans counter. Sneaky sales tactics!
Also keep in mind that most double vanities aren’t going to come with the faucets, so you have to factor that price into your budget.
The size of the space that you have to work with is going to play a huge part in the options that you can get with your double vanity. The larger the space, the more stuff will come with it. A small space (50″-60″) will probably get you two sinks and a cabinet or two beneath. Whereas a 68″ or 70″ double vanity will allow you the space for a set of drawers between the cabinets or even a third cabinet. Height will also be a big factor in the storage space and features of you double vanity. Today’s styles have the vanity off the ground 3″-4″ on four separate feet. This looks great and allows for lots of space, but getting beneath the vanity to clean the dust bunnies is extremely difficult with such a small space to work in.
The secret to finding the perfect vanity is to have the rest of your bathroom planned first. Have a tight vision of what you want everything to look like, everything from the color of the floor to the style of the toothbrush holders. This will make your vanity choice obvious, you’ll see the one and you’ll know right away that it’s perfect. Vanities are expensive, so it’s important to know that you’ve made the right choice.
When you’re researching and shopping it’s very likely that you’ll find a cheap double vanity that fits your specs. The trick is to start online and look for places that offer free shipping. The shipping costs of large fixtures like this are incredible, so that’s an easy way to save some cash. Be sure to read the shipping terms closely though, some companies will require that you have a construction team on the premises to accept the shipping. They do this to make sure that the cabinet comes off the truck properly and safely.
Where To Get Good Deals On Floor Mirrors
As odd as it sounds, the bad economy has made it very easy to find cheap floor mirrors. With more people needing money, they have turned to getting rid of their stuff and floor mirrors certainly fall into the kinds of things that people tend to part with. A classic or antique floor mirror can get a few hundred bucks, which is good for them and perfect for you. The style of long mirrors like these hasn’t changed much over the last century or so, so what was hip back then is still going to work today.
So where do you find these deals? You have a few options. I would start at local garage, yard, and estate sales. I say that because I really enjoy going to them and have seen plenty of large floor mirrors. Be ready with cash though, so when you see the one you want you have the cash to cover it. Another excellent place to look is antique and consignment shops. Many of these mirrors are turning up there as well. You won’t get the same great price that you would at a yard sale, but you can certainly focus your efforts when you only have a few shops to go to instead of cruising around your entire city from sale to sale.
If you aren’t comfortable with second hand furniture, great deals are still out there. The best thing about shopping online is that there are so many different places to shop from. With some patience you’re bound to find the perfect floor mirror for your home at a great price. The price varies a ton from dealer to dealer. It’s very common to see the one you want somewhere for over $300, but later stumble across a very similar one for only $50. The trick is to shop around, the deals are out there.
When shopping for full length floor mirrors online, be sure to read the company’s shipping policy. Expect the shipping to be high, but figure out what their policy is in the case that the mirror breaks during shipping. If all they can guarantee is seven years of bad luck, it might be a good idea to shop somewhere else. The cost of replacing a big mirror like that will cost you almost as much as the entire setup did! If you can find a dealer that offers free shipping and replacement of broken mirrors, you have found yourself a winner!
Floor mirrors are an excellent addition to any home, and usually something that will be passed on for many generations. Spend the time to find the right one that fits your home and you and your family will enjoy it for many years to come.
What To Look For In Farm Sinks
When deciding what to look for in farm sinks, the main thing to consider is who is going to be installing the sink. Farm sinks aren’t the easiest to install, and this is especially true if you’re installing it into a preexisting counter and cabinet. If you’re having someone else install (and take responsibility for) the sink, then your options are endless! Building the cabinet to match the sink is ideal as well, but a different huge project!
Like all sinks, a farm sink is fairly large investment so you want to be sure that you’re getting something that you can live with for a long time. A quality built apron farm sink is going to last much longer than your home will, so spend some time considering all of your options.
There are quite a few different materials used in the construction of farm house sinks. The most common is stainless steel, but ceramic, copper, stone, and even cast iron are available options. Farm sinks are heavy, so if you’re installing it into an existing counter this must be considered. During installation braces and supports will be installed, but most kitchen countertops can’t handle the enormous weight of a stone farm sink. Stainless steel is going to be the lightest and require the least amount of reinforcement (and usually be the most affordable).
If you’re planning on installing the sink on your own, I applaud you! This is a pretty tough job that has, I repeat has, to be done right the first time. Missing the cut on the front or not adding enough support will lead to serious problems later on. Sinks tend to follow Murphy’s law and will collapse or break on Thanksgiving when you have the entire family over to admire your new kitchen and handy work! The good news for the DIY’er is that the plumbing is usually the same as a normal sink (if that’s any consolation).
Buying farm sinks really boils down to your budget and taste. There are great sinks for less than $400 if you’re willing to do the research. If not, you can easily spend over $1000 for a similar sink, before installation. I recommend spending some extra time in the planning and research phase of this project to make sure that you have the farm sink that you’re going to be happy with the rest of your time in your home.
Choosing Bar Faucets
Installing bar faucets in your home, whether it be in a bar or just on your kitchen sink, is an excellent way to improve the feel of your space. Bar sink faucets add a touch of old-school to a modern home, and they create a ton more space in the sink because of their height and narrow profile. With lots of different options to choose from, how do you make a decision? It’s easy when you know what you’re looking at!
Before we go any farther, I should point out some of the minor drawbacks that bar sinks and faucets have. Most bar sinks are stainless steel, when you couple the stainless with the extended height of a bar faucet you have a noisy recipe. It’s only an extra few inches, but it can really make a difference when the water is on high! Bar faucets also have a very limited range. The entire faucet has a small footprint, so getting water to the front of the sink to clean is tricky.
With all of that being said, there are some things that you should look for when buying bar faucets. Design is obviously the most important. One really cool thing is that an authentic faucet is going to be the cheapest one. If you find the same kind that they use in your local dive, it will probably cost you less than thirty bucks! If you are looking for something in a different finish, you can expect to pay much more. Bronze bar faucets are very popular and elegant, but if that’s what you’re looking for do some research to find the best price. It can mean the difference of a few hundred bucks!
The features of bar faucets also vary a lot. You can get faucets that have both the hot and cold stems, a single stem version, or my favorite, the pump. The pumps are very cool because they seem to operate like an old school faucet that pumps the water from under the house, when in reality they just open the valve for a few seconds. Pump bar faucets are very nice, but they tend to get dirty faster due to more contact between the hands and the hardware.
Adding a bar faucet in your home is a wise investment. It can make a dramatic impact on the appearance of your bar or kitchen for not a lot of money. Spend some time shopping around and I’m sure you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for at the price you want.
Kitchen Cabinet Crown Molding
There are many little details that can make a home feel really “complete” and kitchen cabinet crown molding is definitely one of them. Crown molding for kitchen cabinets is a really easy project when you’re in the middle of refinishing or installing your cabinets. If you are planning on adding molding to already finished cabinets, it can be a bit trickier and we’ll get to that later.
Usually a kitchen cabinet molding is smaller than your traditional wall moldings. There really isn’t enough space on most cabinets to fit full size molding on the top of it!
Installing kitchen cabinet crown molding on unfinished cabinets is as simple as using small nails and adhesive to secure it to the ceiling and cabinet and filling any gaps with caulk. In most cases you’ll want to finish or paint it the same time that you do the cabinets so you can make sure that they have the look to them.
Adding a kitchen cabinets crown molding when the cabinet is already painted or finished is tricky, even if you are using the same color paint or finish. The reason for this is that the finish fades over time so you’re going to have either live with it, work to “fade” it, or finish it a different color. I don’t want to hold you back from installing kitchen cabinet crown molding, but be ready to make it work!
Their light weight and ease of install make this the perfect DIY project. If you’re already tearing your kitchen apart, why not put it back together even better than you had planned on?
